An amazing Brazilian animation that truly exemplifies the power of imagery and music as a combination that has more than enough to portray a powerful and deep message. It shows an adventurous quest that illustrates the issues of the modern world through the eyes of a child. A cautionary tale of globalization, The Boy And The World teaches above all the dangers of the massification of the economy, of the mind, and of the soul.

Rating: 8/10

The Boy and the World is a refreshingly original animated film from Brazil, having mostly music and sounds from various instruments as a way to propel the story. The animation is really different from most films of the genre and uses several interesting techniques, such as collages, watercolor paintings and drawings with crayons. It's an explosion of vibrant colors and just a delight to watch. Similarly to Hayao Miyazaki's works, there are lots of surreal and fantastical stuff happening here and even a couple of nightmarish sequences. The story of a countryside boy who goes on a journey to find his father is apparently quite simplistic, but director Alê Abreu tackles some serious themes such as poverty, industrial revolution and consumerism. However, I felt like he could have used a more subtle approach here. The ending is a very surprising and emotional one and I am proud to see such a unique film come out from my country. Highly recommended!
